CHAPTER SIX

Ace

“HELLO?” MIKE CARROLL ASKED, after answering the phone.

“Hey Mickie, it’s me,” Ace said.

“My name is Mike, not Mickie, Mick, or whatever else you come up with for me. You know I hate it when you change my first name. Call me Mike. Wait a second, you shouldn’t be calling me. You know the rules. You’re not supposed to contact anyone until you finish your scheme.” His voice was filled with annoyance. He always treated Ace like a kid brother despite them being the same age.

“I’m in trouble. I fucked up on my plan.” Ace’s eyes watered.

“What’s going on?” Mike's tone changed to warmth and concern. Ace lived for these moments.

“I'm being followed,” Ace answered. Ricardo and his gang were released after a twenty-four-hour hold. For some unknown reason, the request to have them stay in police custody longer was denied. He must have a judge, or someone high up on the political ladder, in his pocket.

“You know what to do when you’re being chased. If they’re bad, take them out and make sure you don’t get caught. You can destroy a body, right?” Mike asked.

“They’ll kill me first.” Ace went to the window in his apartment and opened the curtain a crack. A black SUV was parked on the street like the one he saw last night, following him home. If the police or the FBI were after him, they’d use something bigger and better at blending in with the rest of the vehicles.

“Who is ‘they’? Don’t be cryptic and tell me your plan.”

“I chose to go after Ricardo Leon for his ability to escape the law. You may have heard of him. He’s a gang leader in Treble.” Ace told Mike everything that had transpired. After he finished, he took a deep breath, ready for the rant that would begin.

“I’ve never heard of Ricardo until now, but I can see why you went after him. He has a massive body count, and no one has put him in jail for it. Do you know why?” Mike asked. He must’ve brought up news articles on the killer.

“Ricardo has someone within law enforcement on his payroll. They’re feeding him information or destroying evidence. I don’t know who yet. Nothing is overlapping. Whoever is his lap dog is smart at covering their tracks.”

“What’s your problem then?”

“The Leon Cartel is after me. I ran my mouth off to Ricardo. I couldn’t help myself. He’s a smug, little bastard who killed three of my employees before I even started working.” Ace’s shoulders sagged at his confession. Out of everyone in Vita, he didn’t want to disappoint Mike the most.

“I can understand being pissed off and doing something stupid. Will you be okay until I get there?” Mike asked. He didn’t chew Ace out.

“You’re coming here?” Ace asked, confused.

“How else am I going to help you? You’ll refuse to run away, right?”

“I can’t leave this town with Ricardo running everything. He doesn’t fear killing anyone.”

“That’s what I thought you’d say. I’ll be there soon. Please stay safe.
